Can you recommend some good traditional Irish music?

traditional music
Lately I seem to be interested in traditional Irish music, probably because I am planning a trip to Ireland in another 8 or 9 months. I am looking for something beyond “Danny Boy” and the same few songs played everywhere. I like pub tunes/drinking songs, songs that are lively and make you want to dance, or something a bit melancholly, whether they have vocals or not.

Thanks all, and Happy St. Paddy’s Day to you!
Cheers!

If you want some real beautiful Irish (melancholy) music, try the original soundtrack to River Dance by Bill Whelan. It’s my favorite.

I personally love the songs; Black Velvet Band, Molly Malone (Cockles and Mussels) and the Unicorn song. You could search “The Irish Rovers” and find some classic Irish tunes.
Hope this helps! Happy St. Patricks Day to you too!

The Chieftains are great….they’ve been around for ages, and play a lot of traditonal stuff.

I highly recommend GAELIC STORM. They are energetic, fun, have many drinking songs, and are immensely talented. My faves from them are Johnny Tarr, Drink the Night Away, Johnny Jump up, Swimmin in the Sea, and Midnight Kiss to name a few. Erin Go Bragh!!!!
